All You Need to Know About Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor
Last Updated on, November 4th, 2022
The Sewri Worli Elevated Corridor (SWEC) is a 4.5km elevated road. The road will act as a connector to the two sea links. It will connect the upcoming Mumbai Trans Harbour Link at Sewri on the East to the Bandra Worli Sea Link and upcoming coastal road on the west. The estimated cost of the project is 1,051 crores.
About the Project
In February 2021, the then chief minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray laid the foundation stone of this project. The project comprises two rail over bridges at Sewri and another two-tier bridge at Prabhadevi.
The Sewri-Worli elevated road begins from the Sewri interchange section of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). It crosses the harbour railway line bridge, the flyover at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar road, the Central & Western Railway line at Elphinstone road station, the flyover at Senapati Bapat Road, Kamgar Nagar and ends at Hardikar road in Worli.
The elevated road will not have any signals. It will reduce travelling time and provide direct connectivity to MTHL, Bandra Worli Sea Link and Coastal road. A part of the MTHL project’s traffic dispersal system, this connector will decrease 15% of vehicular traffic.
Impact on Real Estate
The purpose of the Sewri Worli Elevated Corridor is to seamlessly connect MTHL, Bandra Worli Sea Link and the Coastal Road. Hence, it will have an equivalent impact as that of MTHL and Coastal road on Mumbai real estate.
These projects will be a major boost in connectivity to areas of Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai. As connectivity gets robust, it will create a demand for residential homes in prominent areas of South Bombay like Byculla, Mahalakshmi and Lower Parel. In a lavish area like SOBO, the demand for luxury homes will further escalate once projects like SWEC, MTHL and Coastal road are operational.
Luxurious projects like Monte South will see a lot of traction. Monte South is an iconic residential project in Byculla, South Mumbai. It is a joint venture between Marathon Group & Adani Realty. Monte South stands tall on a massive 12.5-acre plot. It will have 4 proposed towers of 64-storeys. The key highlight of Monte South will be its amenities. A podium beach, Amazon-themed landscaping and other best-in-class amenities. Everything is larger than life at Monte South!
Not just the residential homes, the improved connectivity will also increase the demand for commercial spaces in South Mumbai. A Navi Mumbai resident will be able to travel to his office in Lower Parel or BKC in just 1 hour. For working professionals, this will make their life easy.
Current Status
MMRDA began the construction of the road in November 2020. The construction work of this project is challenging as the elevated road passes through slums, buildings and a monorail. As of now, 24% of the work is complete.
According to Mid-day sources, this road may be operational in the next 18 months if the construction work goes smoothly.
To facilitate the construction of SWEC, several residential buildings, slums, and commercial buildings will have to be cleared. The accommodation for residential owners will be provided in Worli while the commercial establishments will be relocated to Parel.
